(PR-Ecologistas en Acción / 07-02-11) Last month, a study about plastics floating in the Mediterranean Sea, carried out by French and Belgian scientists was published.
According to the study there are about 250,000 million pieces of plastic floating, which weight over 500 tones. They are a latent threat for all sorts of life, enter in the food chain through fishing resources and reach human body.
Ecologistas en Acción-Adra wonders how many of the million pieces come from the village Adra.
Adra, as well as the rest of villages where intensive agriculture has become rooted, is not a model to follow regarding to agricultural waste management (organic, packaging, plastics, etc.).
For many years Ecologistas en Acción has been denounced this embarrassing situation (over 20 years).
The reality: greenhouses on the coast that are abandoned and the plastic cover decompose, pieces that fall reaching the sea washed away by rain or wind; plastics that, when changing the cover of greenhouses are thrown into the river, streams and into the sea directly some other times. Some times, even when they change the wire mesh, all together goes to the sea.
Plastics for covering and plastic containers in several landfills along the coast end in the sea. It is not only plastics, they are also organic waste, may with chemical treatments. Sometimes these plastics are burned on the rocks of the jetty on the coast, some other times they are burned wherever.
The UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) says: more than 100,000 turtles and marine mammals -such as dolphins, whales and seals- die every year because of plastic waste they find in the darkness of the oceans.
Why this situation has not been solved yet? It is a serious problem for healthy of citizens and not only for nature, and it is clear that for those with competence, the City Council, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Regional Minister of Environment, the Ministry of Environment and the responsible in the EU, do not think it is a priority for them, and in the end all say “this is not my competence…”.
We, citizens do not care about whom the competence is! We just know that there is a serious problem and our authorities are not solving it; they do not care and time goes by. Their aim in politics is a different one.
